For the purpose of these regulations ships shall be divided into the following classes:
| (1) | Class 1: Foreign-going ships. |
| (2) | Class 2: Ships other than a Class 1 ship |
| (a) | of 200 Ions or more; or |
| (b) | of less than 200 tons which, during their normal voyages or operations, may be at such a distance from a South African port where medical assistance may be obtained that the travelling time to that port would exceed 15 hours at such ship's normal service speed. |
| (3) | Class 3: Ships, other than Class 1 or Class 2 ships, of 25 tons or more. |
